Gluten Free Food List

A question I get asked often is: "There is a list of gluten-free foods I can buy a" normal "shops?" And I always answered the same way: "If you are looking for a list of processed foods (cans, packages, frozen stuff ...), then even if one of you should not use it, as this list is not updated as is just given to you. "

A list compiled by someone else, but well-intentioned, is not a safe choice, as I will explain. Unfortunately, if you are gluten intolerant, sooner or later you'll have to take responsibility for what you eat, do not trust others.

Why should I take this "tough love" to stand? Believe me, not because I want to be intentionally malicious or clumsy. The reason is simple. Processed food manufacturers are flexible in their ingredients, as a rule. It is true that some products (such as Lea and Perrins sauce "Worcestershire - containing malt vinegar, which is not gluten free) are made to secret recipes that have been passed over time and are virtually unchanged. But are the exception rather than the rule.

Have you heard of the days when Coca-Cola has taken the decision to change the recipe for Coca-Cola, twenty years ago? Even without the ads wherever you go, everyone knew it. The taste of the new version is crap. Sales fell on the floor, and it took me 20 years to discover who had returned to a similar (but not identical) to the original recipe a little later. I have not had for 20 years!

Nevertheless, it is somewhat beside the point, but it illustrates the fact that the revenues can and are changing. In the case of coke, they trumpeted, and we do not like it. The new recipe has a different taste.

But it is not always the case. Often, if an ingredient is scarce or too expensive for manufacturers to change recipes without fanfare - not even "Memories", a flash package. In fact, if the taste changes a lot, barely talk about it in advance to all. The only way to tell is to check the ingredients behind.

So I say to anyone for any type of food intolerance to check the label on every package every time you buy - you might be collecting 2 packages of food, but they can come from different batches. How do you know which are the same thing without comparing the ingredients are listed?

There are certain foods that can be eaten without security not worry, though. Here is a list:

- Fresh fish, poultry and meat that are sold without the marinade, coating, glaze or sauce

- Fresh or frozen vegetables that are sold without any kind of sauce or coating

- Fresh fruit sold as (eg) apples in a single package, a pineapple, a bunch of bananas ...

- Canned fruits packed in juice or syrup

- Nuts bought in the shell or peeled and / or roasted without any coating or flavor, no salt

- Dried fruit: apricots, apples, bananas, raisins, figs, pears, peaches, plums, raisins, sultanas, and so on, but check that have not been coated with a "modified starch" to prevent them from sticking together .

- Cheese bought a ball and crushed in the country (except parmesan).

* Note low-fat cream cheese to thicken the hidden gluten.

* Do not buy now unless you look shredded grilled meat - most things in the package is wrapped in "modified starch".

- Butter, milk, eggs, most of them full yogurt (low fat is usually thickened with 'modified starch')

- Rice in the package (any kind) are sold without a sauce or a flavor, quinoa, millet, oats, which is a sign saying that they were treated as gluten-free structure (as they are usually contaminated at the factory), corn, buckwheat, amaranth flour.

These foods are safe if you follow the rules I have mentioned. Everything else is suspect - as breakfast cereals, snack of seafood and soy sauce. Even instant coffee can have gluten added, if one variety at a lower cost.

Remember, people usually do not realize that the slightest suspicion of gluten can cause pain, and some do not care. Your health is in your hands. Check all labels before buying.
